How Rain Can Damage a Home
In dry climate areas like New Mexico a rain shower can feel wonderful. But because it is a dry area the ground may lack the capacity to absorb heavy rainfall which can become a problem even after minimal rain. To reduce the damaging effects of rain on your home, you can prepare with a few simple actions:
- Inspect: Check Your roof and foundation every year for damage: When people think of rain damage they usually assume from the roof, but keeping a properly maintained foundation is also important.
- Clean: Gutters can quickly collect leaves and debris. Overflow will either cause water damage through the roof, or cause water to spill over and collect along the side of your home and potentially seep in from there to the walls and even work its way clear down to the foundation.
- Remove: Sump Pumps are a great way to remove excess water that collects beneath a building. Make sure to routinely check that the sump pump is plugged in and functional.
- Protect: Add weather stripping and caulking to the HVAC system and around windows and doors.
