Drain Back Up

5 Common Causes of Drain Backups

5 Common Causes of Drain Backups

The things we take for granted. Things like water flowing flawlessly through our pipes day in and day out. That is until we face a drain backup and have to make a mad dash for the plunger. It’s the worst! But it happens to most everyone. Why? Read below for 5 of the most common causes of drain backups and how to avoid it from happening to you.

  1. Drain FOG: Have you heard of it? Pouring fat oil and grease down the sink can cause much damage to pipes. It congeals as it cools, builds up on the inside of your pipe walls and will eventually creating a blockage. Instead, pour FOG into a container suitable for storage. Your pipes will thank you for it.

  1. Flush nothing down the toilet except waste and toilet paper: and even that can cause a backup when using too much. No baby wipes, paper towels, napkins, facial tissue, diapers, rags etc.… cat litter. Yes you read it correctly: cat litter….it happens.

  1. Tree Roots: We love our trees, however their normally life giving roots can snake around your sewer lines and crush them. They can also grow into the pipes and cause holes and blockages. Even if you don’t have trees directly in the area of your main sewer line, neighboring trees might be an issue which may lead to a drain backup. Tree roots damaging a sewer line is a very common problem that can cause serious main line drain backups of waste water into your home or yard.

  1. Broken or Collapsed Sewer Lines: Pipes in older homes can be made of clay or cast iron that does not withstand the test of time. When a line is cracked or collapsed, the sewage won’t be able to properly drain through the system leading to all too frequent drain backups.

  1. Torrential rain: If the municipal water system can’t keep up with the amount of rain flow it becomes over burden and can leave property owners to face sewer backups in their homes.
