7 Signs of Drainage Issues Caused by Monsoons

Monsoon season is upon us. Technically, monsoon season is June 15 through September; however, New Mexico is seeing more moisture this year than usual. With this increase, many people are experiencing drainage issues on their property. Below are a few telltale signs that indicate you need to divert water in your yard:

7 Signs of Water Drainage Problems

  1. Overflowing gutters
  2. Drifting mulch
  3. Pooling water
  4. Soggy ground
  5. Flaking walls in your basement
  6. Basement leaks
  7. Mold & Mildew odors

What Causes Water Drainage Problems?

Flash floods: The potential for heavy bursts of rain over mostly desert areas of the southwest results in flash floods because the soil has been hardened by the sun and cannot absorb the excess water.  This leaves the rain with nowhere to go, and it can quickly build and travel to cause widespread damage.

Grading Issues: The grading or soil should always slope away from the home to prevent water from accumulating near the foundation. Check the slope in your neighbor’s yard too. If the runoff from their yard is flowing into yours see if you can divert that extra water or work amicably with your neighbors to do so on their side of the property line.

Along with grading issues, you could have cracks in your driveway that allow water in. If your driveway is up against your house, you may have a gap where the two meet. This lets water run down the exterior of the foundation causing much damage along the way.

Ways To Divert Water from Your Home

Diverting water from your home will take time, money, and effort but it is well worth it. Here’s how:

  • Clean the Gutters
  • Extend the Downspouts
  • Create a Rain Garden
  • Install a Rain Barrel
  • Seal the Driveway
  • Install a French Drain
  • Improve the Grading
  • Install a Sump Pump
