Water Damage Costs: The Estimate – Part 2 of 5

Whether it’s a broken pipe, a leaky roof or bathtub overflow, water damage can cause much frustration to homeowners. It’s important to act fast and call Water Extraction Experts in order to lessen damage to your home and unnecessary strain on your checkbook.

How water damage repair costs are calculated

There are five main areas that determine the costs of water damage repair such as the extent of damage, cause of damage, type of water damage, reconstruction, and any coverage from your homeowners insurance.

Extent of Damage: Most of the costs are calculated around what is damaged and to what extent.  Is the damage cosmetic or structural? Is there also damage to personal items? Is there electrical damage?  Is there mold growth?  Depending on the surface, material, and water or moisture levels, fungal growth can begin within 24 to 48 hours. We work fast to remediate any mold growth that may have occurred.

Cause of Damage: The source of the damage needs to be taken into consideration. Replacing a leaky faucet is far less expensive than replacing a leaky roof for instance.

Type of Water Damage: Category 1 is from clean water sources such as leaky faucets and toilet tanks. If you don’t clean a Category 1 issue quickly it could progress into Category 2 damage. As the category increases, so does the cost to fix the issues.

Category 2 is gray water which may contain harmful contaminants from overflowing dishwashers and washing machines that contain cleaning products requiring special care in remediation.

Category 3 aka Black Water: flooding from rivers, lakes, contaminated groundwater, storm surges, and sewage backups. Black water should be taken seriously, as it can pose health risks. Only professionals should handle black water clean-up.

In the cases of floods or broken pipes, medium to small amounts of water can be pumped out by us with submersible pumps, however, large amounts of water will require hiring a pump truck. In some plumbing cases a licensed plumber may need to be hired. We can provide recommendations if needed.

Reconstruction: The amount of reconstruction required will affect the cost of water damage repair. We will determine if flooring, subflooring and drywall needs to be removed and replaced.  Ceiling damage may require light fixtures and ceiling fans to be removed and replaced.  Also damage to cabinets, vanities, kitchen counters etc. will also need to be considered.

Insurance Coverage: Insurance companies may not cover the repairs if you attempt to do them yourself. Be sure to call them immediately to insure coverage. Then call us. We will do the work for you.
