Flooded Basement

Water Damage in Your Home or Business-Part 2

In part 1 of water damage in your home, we focused on bathrooms and appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators. In part 2, will address other common areas, such as basements and roofs in a home or in a business where we commonly see water damage occur.

BASEMENTS & CRAWL SPACES

Basements and crawls spaces are located in the bottom part of a house and often have many opportunities for water leaks. Heavy rain is often a cause for water damage to occur. Flooding through vents and window wells can quickly cause severe water damage. Also, cracks in a foundation can be a source of water damage.

Water Heaters –Water heaters don’t last forever. When corrosion occurs, the water heater can form a leak and cause severe water damage in a basement. Learn about how to maintain your water heater here.

Sump Pumps – If you have a sump pump, you should test it regularly to ensure it’s working correctly. You can learn more about how to test a sump pump here.

PipesPipes are everywhere– under floors, behind walls, in the basement and even outside your house. The smallest pinhole in a pipe can cause enormous water damage. “We get a lot of calls in New Mexico due to pipes leaking.”, stated Matt Adlesperger, owner, and operator of Water Extraction Experts in the Albuquerque, Santa Fe area.

In the wintertime, when it gets very cold (this is a common problem in Wyoming and Colorado), we get several calls due to frozen pipes bursting. It’s important to winterize all pipes exposed to cold (such as your hose bib) and if you’re leaving your home or business, lower your thermostat to between 50°F and 60°F. If you turn it lower than 50°F you run the risk of frozen pipes in cold weather.

ROOFS

If your roof is damaged it could be susceptible to flooding. In Wyoming and Colorado, we’ve had several bad hail storms that can cause severe damage to a roof. If you’ve experienced a hail storm on your property, it’s important to get your roof inspected by a trusted roofing company.

A minor roof leak could rapidly turn into a major issue and cause severe water damage to your property if not addressed immediately. Damaged shingles incorrectly installed flashing and clogged gutters can all lead to leaks. In the fall, it’s important to make sure your gutters have been cleaned.

If you do end up with water damage, give us a call. We can help you! It’s important to act quickly. Mold can develop in areas not treated rapidly.
