Winter is Here! Part 3 of 5: Be Prepared for Winter Emergencies
This time of year is a special one for families and friends. Whether for a walk through the snow or cuddling up in front of the fire, once thing is for certain, winter is a time for togetherness. Sadly, it can also be a time for winter emergencies. By taking proactive measures now, you can help insure this winter to be a safe one. The CDC advises us to be prepared for weather-related emergencies, including power outages. Continue reading to find out how:
- Purchase a generator or have an alternate safe house to go to if necessary
- Have extra warm clothes and blankets available.
- Cuddle!
- Stock food that needs no cooking or refrigeration and water stored in clean containers.
- Stock a 3 day water supply (one gallon per day per person and pet).
- Stock food for pets.
- Don’t open your refrigerator or freezer unless absolutely necessary.
- Only flush if necessary.
- Ensure that your cell phone is fully charged.
- Disconnect
- When planning travel, be aware of current and forecast weather conditions.
Keep an up-to-date emergency kit, including:
- Battery-operated devices, such as a flashlight, a NOAA Weather Radio, and lamps.
- Extra batteries.
- First-aid kit and extra medicine.
- Baby items
- Cat litter or sand for icy walkways.
Protect your family from carbon monoxide (CO):
- Keep grills, camp stoves, and generators out of the house, basement, and garage.
- Locate generators at least 20 feet from the house.
- Leave your home immediately if the CO detector sounds and call 911.
