Winter is Coming! Are You Prepared? (Part 2 of a 5 Part Series in preparing for winter)
In Part 1 of this series, we discussed preparing your home for winter. In Part 2 we will talk about preparing your vehicle for the colder months ahead. It’s vital to keep your car in good working order. Be sure to check the heater, defroster, brakes, brake fluid, ignition, emergency flashers, exhaust, oil, and battery. Keep reading for winter checklists advised by the CDC:
Preparing Your Vehicle
- Service the radiator and maintain antifreeze level.
- Check the tread on your tires. If necessary, replace tires with all-weather or snow tires.
- Keep the gas tank full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines.
- Use a wintertime formula in your windshield washer.
- Check the oil, is it time for a change?
Create an emergency car kit.
Though it is best to avoid traveling during winter, prepare a winter emergency kit to keep in your car in case you become stranded:
- Cell phone, portable charger, and extra batteries.
- Items to stay warm, such as extra hats, coats, mittens, blankets, or sleeping bags.
- Food and water.
- Compass and maps.
- Flashlight, battery-powered radio, and extra batteries.
- Plastic bags (for sanitation).
- Windshield scraper
- Shovel
- First aid kit with any necessary medications and a pocket knife
- Tow chains or rope
- Tire chains
- Tire pump
- Canned compressed air with sealant for emergency tire repair
- Cat litter or sand for tire traction, or road salt to melt ice
- Booster cables with fully charged battery or jumper cables
- Hazard or other reflectors
- Bright colored flag or help signs, emergency distress flag, and/or emergency flares
- Waterproof matches and a can to melt snow for water
